This is probably one of L'Amour's better books. At the beginning of each tale about Chick Bowdrie, L'Amour puts a historical note about the old west. Not all relate exactly to his 15 page story that picks another incident in Chick Bowdrie's life as a Texas Ranger, but they do illustrate how varied the lives of those men could be, as well as the types of persons who made up the 1870 - 1890 western framework of time that most authors of this genre are dealing with. I like the endings of a number o [...]

The author Louis L'Amour is synonymous with western novels. And when it comes to lawmen, no one can compare with the likes of Chick Bowdrie. If you're looking for the adventure of the untamed Wild West that's overrun with lawlessness, you've come to the right place.Lawlessness was pervasive during the latter part of the nineteenth century, especially in the new lands out West. Law enforcement needed help. Up sprang the Texas Rangers. One man stood head and shoulders above all the rest, Chick Bow [...]

A collection of western short stories featuring Texas Ranger Chick Bowdrie, authored by Louis L'Amour. 10 stories which could have been monotonous, featuring a Ranger tracking down a bad guy who has committed a crime, but avoid that fate. Bowdrie's comments about the clues he is following add to the interest (Marks near the top of the boot where a rider has knelt near a fire indicate he was wearing old-fashioned boots with mule-ear straps). Notable stories include: Bowdrie joins up in "McNelly K [...]

I am a Louis L'Amour completest and this is my 76th L'Amour book that I have read so far. Obviously I am a fan so please take that into consideration as you consider my review. This a collection of 10 short stories all featuring the Texas Ranger character, Chick Bowdrie. All of these stories, along with those collected in Bowdrie, were written for the pulp magazines of the 1940's and 50's. The last Bowdrie story, "Strange Pursuit" (contained in this volume) was published in 1952.I find the charac [...]

This was given 4 stars based upon two of the stories, particularly the last one. Both stories have the main character, Bowdrie, bond with the person he is trailing. They were well written. The length of the stories is about right, 20 minutes or so, and are typical L'Amour stories. If you like him, you will like these.

A great collection of stories. Personally I can't read more the 1 or 2 of This authors books in a year without getting bored. They are great but very formulaic. This one centers around a recurring character in each story, Chick Bowdrie, they are quite well written and worth the time if you like the western genre.

Loved it. Louis L'Amour's Chick Bowdrie reminds me of Lee Child's Jack Reacher a driven loner that's committed to using might to prove right and fighting for the underdog. The book is a collection of short stories about Bowdrie's solving crimes and catching the bad guys in the Old West intermixed with short history lessons. L'Amour at his best.

If you like stories about good guys who kick butt and get the girl and the bad guys who get it in the end, read Louis L'amour. He also has a knack for describing scenery, and every canyon, spring, etc. he mentions truly exists. He was a great authority on the American Wild West which is not quite how Hollywood often portrays it.

It took me a few dozen pages to fall into the rhythm of this book, but by the end I was thoroughly enjoying myself. Some of the stories were excellent examples of "making your foe your friend," but still standing by the law, which I love.

Louis L'amour is one of the best western writers. His stories seem real and they explain the "old" west. His Historical Notes are also very interesting. I enjoy reading these books. The stories are short and easy to get into.

A continuation of the first books style, the vignettes have Chick Bowdrie traveling over the west to capture killers. Bowdrie is a worthy man as he recognizes truth and tries to give everyone a chance to do right.

This is an enjoyable book of short stories about a Texas Ranger, Chick Bowdrie. I found the characters likable/hateable, but a little predictable. I guess with stock Westerns, you will run into pretty much the same cast of characters over and over. I liked it and I would read more Louis L'Amour.

I thought it was a good book but I didn't like how it wasn't just one story. It was several different stories that were just notable manhunts in Bowdrie's life.

Enjoyed reading this collection of Louis L'Amour short stories. Chick has a way of finding the culprit in a short amount of time yet the author keeps you guessing as who the bad guy really is.

The Bowdrie books are my favourite out of all the Louis' I've read. They are suspenseful, mysterious, and exciting. They show how a half-breed works from the inside out.

Selection of short stories adding up to a novel. Other than the fact the flow was disjointed due to the gaps in narration, this was a entertaining read.
