How can something so clinical be so much fun? Well, James White's Sector General novels are a science fiction series truly unlike any other. Sector General is a hospital space station whose patients and medics are of every imaginable form of alien that one's mind can conjure (as White fabulously does!), and at the heart of it all is White's ingenious dry wit as well as his deep concern for compassion.Final Diagnosis is the tenth novel in this series, and while many of the previous novels center [...]

I have most of the Sector General series in paperback, but because I bought a few of the later ones before they went to paperback, some, such as this one, are in hardback. The last few books (written in White's own last years) were told from various points of view. This one is told from the point of view of a patient, Hewlitt, who, though he is of Earth-human descent, was born on Etla the (formerly) Sick. Although most of the Etlan Empire joined the Federation after the 'police action', Etla the [...]

Patient Hewlitt doesn't want to come to Sector General. He's a chronic xenophobe, and doesn't want anything to do with non Earth-humans. But he's come to the conclusion that Sector General is the only place he can get the medical help which, as a Federation citizen, he's entitled to.Hewlitt has always been a loner, and this is largely due to his medical condition, which requires him to avoid potential sexual encounters. But it's also because he was orphaned as a child, and was taken away from hi [...]

Hewlitt is fed up. Every doctor he sees thinks he is a hypochondriac or that his illnesses are in his mind. So Hewlitt goes to Sector General in a last ditch attempt to find out what is wrong with him.

Patient Hewlitt arrives at Sector General with one medical mystery, and one too-obvious mental condition. While waiting for his next, inevitable medical collapse, Hewlitt must share a ward with patients of other sentient species. Hewlitt has rampant xenophobia.White performs the remarkable feat of exposing Hewlitt's disgust at other species, while making his learning experience interesting and intriguing. His curiosity and ours are being satisfied at the same time, until we like being more insid [...]

This is the story of an earth man that has a medical problem that the doctors on earth can't or won't resolve. He has the money and influence to go the Sector General to have the doctors their solve his problem. A little slow in the start because it provides more background and character description than required, but overall good. After about 30 or 40 pages the story picks up, and shows the hospital administration importance, as well at the pathology departments role in patient care. In the end [...]

I am glad that I found this book in an old book sale. Thirty years ago I started and loved this series and this book fit in well. There were some heavy references to previous books in the series, but after having been away for so long it still read very well. What was really enjoyable for me was it actually reminded me of those books I had read so long ago and brought back many fond and happy memories. The Sector General books are an excellent melding of "House" and "ST:TNG", the funny thing is [...]

This was a re-read with the first reading having been long ago. I'd remembered the setting and that I had enjoyed it, but it took me quite a while to find the author/series. I think the series has held up pretty well since started circa 1962! With modern CGI being what it is, I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie of some part of the series--I love the premise and setting. Interesting characters, unusual concept, well written sci fi. I'm on the lookout at used bookstores for more of the Sector [...]

Engaging novel from the Sector General series concerning a possible interstellar pathogen for this hospital space station. although peopled by many species in both its staff and patients,it has a mostly harmonious atmospheree late Irish author,a staunch pacifist, liked to fill his series with medical mysteries instead of aggressive military action. He's not well known in the US which is a shame i found this novel enjoyable and would like to read more of his works.

This was a fun if somewhat more scripted story as opposed to organic I guess I would say. It builds on the outcome of another sector general story 25 years in the past with some sleuthing which someone who had just read the other stories might have picked up on (I missed it). Nice new big idea but not as emotionally engaging as some of the other stories.

I have been reading James White's Science Fiction since the sixties, and his books are good keep around to read a few years hence kind of books. He's a good writer, and once I had tracked down all the old, out of print editions, paying a fortune for many of them, someone had the good sense to publsh them in a two volume edition, or was it three, anyway, got those too. Told you I was a book fiend.

This book had an unexpected ending that was satisfactory as can be. It was interesting to watch the primary character go through his trials and exploits with the previously-introduced denizens of Sector General. Talk about a medical mystery!
