The earlier stories sound more like Naguib Mahfouz, but as one progresses through the stories it becomes clear that Idris has his own, darker and very distinctive voice.The Stranger is an outlaw that appears in the dream-like countryside of World war II Egypt like a genie of human appearance and an inhuman half-human, half animal nature.
