I really enjoyed this because if you havent noticed by now I love books about the history of fields or history in general. The book is really general and so I wouldn't read it if you want to learn details and specifics about how forensics work but if you want a quick read that'll give you an idea of the time line in which forensics started to be used then you should totally read this. Also if you're looking for an introductory book into forensics science this is a good read as well.

"Murder has a magic all of its own.” So said William Roughhead, a 19th century criminologist, and so opens Silent Witnesses: The Often Gruesome but Always Fascinating History of Forensic Science.McCrery sets out to demonstrate the wizardry and science of forensic identification, which, as he notes, is "a history of uniqueness."The book is divided into chapters, with each section discussing the technological progression of one particular form of forensic evidence: fingerprints and physical iden [...]

Police programmes with a focus on forensics are hugely popular, the CSI franchise getting some 30 million viewers at the height of its popularity. The realists of course know that actual real life forensics isn't like that, it's often laborious and very time consuming. The instantaneous results obtained by Horatio Caine and Mac Taylor don't reflect real life. And certainly not back a few hundred years ago when forensic science was just starting out. This book took me a while to read because it's [...]

Continuing my odd streak of reading nonfiction books, I finished Nigel McCrery's Silent Witnesses: A History of Forensic Science this evening. As I read it, mostly while waiting at the mechanic's garage waiting, I paused to contemplate my fingerprints (to see if I have arch, whorl, or loop prints) or looked at the mechanics' hands to wonder what chemicals and substances they might transfer. (I got more than a few weird looks of my own.) Silent Witnesses is a solid introduction to forensics, with [...]

Çok beğendim. Polisiye romanları her zaman çok seven, Bones ve CSI gibi dizilerin müptelası olan benim için adli tıp tarihini gerçek olaylarla okumak gerçekten müthişti.

This was a really engaging look at the history of forensic science, particularly relating to murder cases. I have a good background knowledge in the area, and thought this was very well researched. The historical background was thorough, and went beyond what is mentioned in a lot of other books on the subject. Well written and interesting, I would recommend.

I guess I've read too many books on forensic science as it pertains to solving crimes, because this book was mostly a rehash of cases I was already familiar with, and not written in a terribly gripping way. It might not be bad for a starter book for someone unfamiliar with the history of forensics, though.

I picked up this book from the Library because I majored in Forensic Chemistry and love reading books on the topic. The book is broken down into 7 main topics that Forensics covers. He goes through each chapter giving a nice background on each topic and also gives various stories of how different cases helped or used a method to bring justice to the perpetrator. Many of the cases I had never heard before and I thoroughly enjoyed the history behind the methods/ideas.I give this book 3 stars for a [...]

For someone like me, who doesn't know much about forensics except what I've seen on TV, this was a good book -- interesting, informative, and a fun read. It doesn't have a whole lot of detail about each area of forensics it discusses, but it's not meant to be that kind of book. It's a history of forensics, not a forensics text; McCrery takes us through the last few centuries of forensic detection, giving general information of different areas like fingerprinting, trace analysis, and DNA, and ill [...]

A quick read through the history of forensic science, from the beginnings of establishing identity (descriptions, fingerprinting), through ballistic investigation, detecting blood traces (and figuring out if it's human blood), tracking trace evidence (mud, fibers, maggots), figuring out what to do with bodily evidence, detecting poisons, and finally, using DNA evidence.

FascinatingExcellent balance of scientific explanations and micro-histories. Highly recommended for people interested in forensics and mysteries. Warning: it does get a bit graphic in a small handful of places.

This book is a great introduction to forensic science, and is divided into chapters based on how crimes have been solved. However, if you’re a lover of true crime, you won’t find any new or scintillating cases within these pages.

Great number of anecdotes throughout demonstrating the history of forensic science but I would’ve like a few more modern crimes thrown in. Also, entire chapters, and the whole book in fact, were summed up all too briefly; felt lacking in conclusion.

The first third or so was dry and I had a hard time dragging myself through it. The second half really picked up. Overall, it's a decent book to get an overall general history of forensic science.

A well-presented introduction to forensic science told as a combination of historical developments in science and cases where the techniques were implemented. A little gruesome since I usually prefer to read crime fiction - maintaining the comfort that it's not actually real - but everything is presented to be factual and respectful, while still very fascinating.

McCrery provides an overview of major developments in the fields of identification, ballistics, blood, trace evidence, what can be learned from bodies, poisons, and DNA. Each chapter also looks at key scientists in breakthroughs in these areas, and sample or key cases that established the validity/usefulness of certain forensic methods. There are two things that set apart this book from other forensic books I've read. One, the author only talks about his own forensic work rarely, so this reads m [...]

This book was very informative but I had to take breaks from reading because it made SO ANGRY. SO MANY WOMEN GET KILLED, GUYS! So many that I swear in 3 outta every 4 cases in this book is a new forensic technology first used in a murder case where a woman got murdered by some dude. I WAS SO ANGRY. STOP KILLING WOMEN.Also yes, the new forensic techniques and the history of the first major case when a new technique was first use to solve the case is very interesting, BUT HOLD SHIT SO MANY WOMEN A [...]

“All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand…”Nigel McCrery has had an interesting career – an ex-policeman turned screenwriter, he’s the man behind such successful TV dramas as Silent Witness and New Tricks, and has also written several crime novels. All of which makes him perhaps the ideal person to write a book on the history of the contribution of forensic science to crime detection. Each chapter looks at a different aspect of forensics – ballistics, blood, finger [...]

Silent Witnesses is an easily accessible and well-written primer on the history of forensic science. It reads like a work of fiction but offers the reader a clear history of many of the most important advances in forensic investigative techniques. The topics are covered in chapters titled: Identity, Ballistics, Blood, Trace Evidence, The Body, Poisons, and DNA. Each subject is reviewed chronologically and numerous milestone cases in the development and growth of forensic science are presented.Fo [...]

In Nigel McCrery’s book on forensic science, McCrery takes us through developments that led to better are more technical ways to prove which criminal committed which crime. This begins the first of seven chapters, each one becoming more detailed in establishing both the identity and method used to commit the crime. Mostly he uses a murder case as an example of how forensic science was improved to provide proof of who committed the crime. The first problem had always been in finding a way to est [...]

Nigel McCrery created Silent Witness, which aired on the BBC featuring a team of forensic pathologists, as well as the more light-hearted New Tricks, this time about retired policemen solving cold crimes. The author started his working life as a police officer in Nottinghamshire and towards the end of this book he uses one of the cases he worked on to show how DNA profiling can be successful many years after a murder. In his introduction the author launches straight in with details of a murder of [...]

There are seven chapters divided into identity, ballistics, blood, trace evidence, body, poison, and DNA.Within each, the author, gives info on real cases where a specific element of forensics came into use and how it helped to find guilty or find an innocent freed. I really enjoyed the TV show Silent Witness so my Mum bought me this for my birthday after seeing that one of the creators of the show wrote it. It sat on my shelf for a while as I wasn't sure that it was the type of book that I'd really enjoy but when I picked it up I was really glad I did!The book covers some of the major breakthroughs in forensic science in a way that focuses on the history surrounding the breakthroughs rather than the nitty gritty of the science itself. Although not quite as strong as similar books on the topic, Silent Witnesses was a thorough, decently engaging pop history. Because it's an overview of all the forensic techniques, there isn't really enough time for any particular biography or topic to take center stage and while that was a flaw, in that it meant the story lacked an over-arching narrative, it also gave the author a chance to take a broad scope and put all the pieces together. I would have liked the book to have gone into more de [...]
