This is an excellent story set in the High Sierras, full of adventure, friendship and learning to accept others. The story is told from the view of a somewhat nerdy middle schooler, Renee, who signs up for a backpacking trip with best friend Abby. In the course of the hike, Renee ends up involved in a survival adventure with "popular girl" Sofia and learns to shed her preconceived notions of others and to realize that friendships can cross many boundaries. I loved this book. It was a fun, quick read and one that I didn't want to put down. I found the interaction between the characters real and the twist on the teachings the author leaves for kids quite provocative. I highly recommend the book to middle schoolers and adults alike. I really enjoyed it.

I bought this book for my teen girls (2 of em) to read on our summer road trip. They really enjoyed it. They related to the bratty antics of the middle school cool kids and really liked that they recognized lots of places in the Sierras and Mammoth Lake area that we've been to and things we've seen (the Perseid Showers!).
