Informative intro to the life of Dr. Carver. While filled with many details and tidbits about his life and work, I only gave this book 3 stars because I felt it downplayed the horrors of the racism and slavery that Dr. Carver and other black people encountered in his time. It need not be gruesome, but it should be more realistic. The author goes out of their way to highlight "Words to Know", including "Racism" and "Slavery", but then does a disservice by minimizing them. Racism is defined as "Th [...]

While George Washington Carver didn't invent peanut butter, he did develop a version of it. He also discovered many other uses for peanuts such as gasoline, paper, and as a sustainable crop to keep soil nutrient rich.George Washington Carver was born a slave, kidnapped as a baby, and finally taken in by his owners once slavery ended. He faced opposition from many angles, but he kept working and made many people's lives better because of it. He was a brilliant man with a vision and the good work [...]

George Washington Carver was the “plant whisperer” of his time. Why? Because he loved to study plants. He also discovered that the peanut plant was host to many tasty food items like peanut butter. He was born near Diamond, Missouri. George was also born a slave, which is why his last name was Carver. He took on his slave owners last name.During his time the United States was a very different place than it is now. People traveled by foot, wagons and horses. Children went to school in one roo [...]

MY REVIEW:Attention all Teachers, Home-schoolers, and parents. This is a simple, "to the point" beginning reader's book on the first Black man to graduate from an Iowa University. He was best known for his agricultural talents but also invented things and was an artist and a teacher. Here is a man who is truly a marvel and deserves this honor. The book also touches on what the nation was like during the years he lived. It contains easily retained trivia in aiding history lessons. At the end of tho [...]

Full review with teaching tools at unleashingreaders/?p=9265The National Geographic Readers are such a wonderful way to introduce readers to some very important people in history. The books don’t back down from hard subjects like racism and poverty, but instead teach the reader about it in an easy to understand way. And to help the reader even more, throughout the books, any tough words are defined, sidebars are filled with additional information, and text features such as illustrations, graph [...]

I did not like this book because I do not like peanuts. I also did not like this book because this book had a bunch of peanuts in it.
