Until the mid-20th-century, Canada had no national collection or archive of culinary materials, and the collection that had been shipped to the British Library had been destroyed. This meant that when Driver decided that "until we knew what cookbooks had been written and published in Canada and where you could find them, no one could really understand and appreciate the scope and breadth of history," she had to locate most of the primary-source materials on her own.
