DNF.

A Joyfully Jay review. 4.75 starsThere is so much I love about this book. A good portion of what I love so much is the style of the writing. The writing is quietly beautiful and has a melodic cadence with a dreamy quality that I became lost in. It’s important to note this because as much as this style is exactly what I love to read, I understand that it is potentially not for everyone. The book is told from Aaron’s point of view. He’s a writer and he’s introspective and at times melanchol [...]

I think this one will appeal more to younger people. It's basically about a group of 23 year olds looking back on their youth. Honestly, that whole concept has me rolling my eyes a bit. The writing is OK, but it makes an effort to build the kind of emotional angst only teenagers can feel out of the kinds of things teenagers get worked up about. Like a fight with your dad or suddenly finding out money doesn't grow on trees and your parents can't foot the bill for your private out of state educati [...]

Obsessed with seeing his high-school boyfriend again, he is plagued with insecurities. He loves his friends passionately, he competes with them fiercely and he wishes them well. This is so much more than a gay [...]

The Luckiest, I think, will be the book that gets me back into reading. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy a couple of weeks ago and, having loved the source material and the author for several years, I read the entire thing in two sittings over forty-eight hours: this after having not read a novel in almost a year. And now all I want to do is curl up with a million books just like it and indulge in the fantasies and the bliss and the emotion that comes from a well-told story abou [...]

2.5/5 starsAaron Wilkinson has spent the last several years trying to get past his break-up with Nik, his high school sweetheart. The two run in the same circle of friends and have found a way to co-exist around each other, but there are still feelings there, under the surface. Aaron is in pain and he’s angry over having his heart broken by Nik, but most of all he’s angry at himself for still loving the guy. Nik, well Nik just wants to find his way back into Aaron’s life. But Aaron doesn [...]

From my review tag on tumblr: Gosh, so I read this one before I checked out the original. Yes, I was aware of the original. Like in Lovesong, I tried to connect the characters to the original characters, but it was different. With Lovesong, I was so attached to the original, I couldn’t let go of it, but with Luckiest, I only wanted to know who was who so I could have fucking peace and quiet in my head.I connected Aaron/Kurt, Nik/Blaine, Alex/Tina and Stephanie/Rachel immediately. i really liked the story a lot. it read very much like a memoir/personal account of aaron's life and it took me a few pages to get the hang of things but once i did, i liked the writing style very much. it also took a few minutes to get traction on the complete cast of characters, although the two most important are nik and aaron. and they are absolutely beautiful together. nik seems like a typical musician - he was a bit more sentimental and emotionally open. you never have any guess how he fee [...]

It’s kind of like the ‘Big Chill.’ But instead of disillusioned thirty-somethings brought together for the funeral of a friend, we have a younger, millennial group of twenty-somethings fresh out of college, looking forward to the rest of their lives. These friends reunite to put together a home-made wedding for two of their own— childhood sweethearts reaching for the brass ring. All of them close since high school, they’ve maintained that special connection. And that’s the main thing [...]

So, having left my youth far behind me, I found myself happily struck by Mila McWarren’s novel The Luckiest, which tells the story of a group of friends who gather for a wedding. Well, not struck, so much, but it struck up in me a wave of nostalgia-for-something-that-never-happened.The story is that of Aaron Wilkinson, who travels from New York back to his growing-up-home of Texas to help a group of friends prepare for a wedding. Once there, he’s thrown back into the dynamic relationships fr [...]

*ARC provided to Bayou Book Junkie by author/publisher via Pride Promotions in exchange for an honest review*This was such a fantastic, detailed read! I absolutely adored the setting, the flashbacks, the main story, the sub-plot and the characters. This is not an overly angsty story, it's a story of love but not just romantic love, it's also about the kind of love only true friends can share, the kind of love that will help and support you through the best and darkest times of your lives and tha [...]

Original review on Molly LollyFour and a half stars! This story started out really confusing and awkward. You get thrown in the deep end of a huge group of friends without much of an introduction to most of them. You’ve got to glean enough information from context to continue. I was afraid I’d get overwhelmed and give up before the story got going. But I kept reading and I am ever so glad that I did. Aaron and Nik’s love for each other is beautiful to watch. Their closest friends are the bi [...]

I really enjoyed this book. I received it from in exchange for an honest review. A very easy read to fall into, even if you don't have time to read it in one sitting. I like correspondence style narratives and having emails/blogs throughout made the story more enjoyable. If the book were solely made up of Aaron’s blog posts it would be just as good, hilarious, heart-tugging etc. Just another way the author nicely draws you in to the story so you don’t feel like a voyeur. These characters [ru [...]

This started life as a fanfiction, and it kind of shows. This is not a criticism in itself; there are some excellent fanworks out there, and this is one of the better ones (as evidenced by the fact that it's been published, if by a small press). The issue is not that it's bad writing, which it mostly isn't - I quite enjoyed both the original and the updated version. But the fact is, in a fanfic, you can use the source material as a shorthand: "x is the star, y is the sassy one, z is the awkward o [...]

I love the delicacy of this book. The prose is gorgeous, the cast of characters compelling, and the relationships feel deeply lived-in, as though we've known them as long as the characters have known one another. Some readers have felt as though "not much happens," and I have to disagree. Sure, we're not talking about a Bond thriller, but this is a novel where small actions feel huge. You know those people you've known forever and who can read you in one look? That's what this entire book feels [...]

I enjoyed this but it wasn't fantastic. I didn't quite feel the chemistry and connection between the 2 main MC's. When they were together it was super hot but I felt it jumped a bit too much to their history, though it was nice to get a good back story. I wasn't interested so much in their friends and I think they got too much of the plot time. It was just missing something and I can't put my finger on it. The sexy times were perfect though, the little details in their time together was very muc [...]

I thought this was an absolutely delightful love story. Having the story span a week gave it a "slice of life" feel, to which the interspersed blog posts and email added.I liked how it was obvious that the point of view in the story was truly biased. I think that was nice touch to add to the emotional impact of the story. All in all, this was such a lovely read and it was so nice to spend a time with Aaron, Nik and their friends having fun and celebrating each other. The best kind of escapism.

I think maybe if I read this 10 years ago, I may have enjoyed it more. 22-23 years being angsty about high school and moving into the workforce, all while having a 1-week wedding party/prep thing. The whole book spans the one week, with each chapter being a different day, with annoying little correspondence interlude chapters between each one. After 4 years of bitterness, things seem to be resolved awful fast (like one day)ybe instead of spending 3 or 4 pages describing the cake-making process c [...]

I'm not going to rate this book since I mostly skimmed it. Apparently this started out as Glee fan fiction, and god, that makes so much sense now. There was some good stuff in here, but it got really bogged down by the writing. I felt like the author had started by writing out pages and pages of notes about the characters, as authors do before or while they're writing, but instead of using those to process their thoughts, the author just copy/pasted all of those notes into the novel without edit [...]

Allow me to preface this review with this: I would recommend this book to everyone, it really was a very good book.I was really excited about this book when I first heard about it; however, it didn't draw me in as much as I had initially hoped. The characters were fun and likable, the story was well written (save for the fact that you have to continuously hear Aaron say how annoying Stephanie is, but she's still a good friend; I get it, I got it the first two times, but this is just a minor grip [...]

Not bad for a first effort. The story was a little long and had no real conflict so there was no build up to anything to keep me wanting to turn the pages. The cast of characters was rather large and I had a lot of trouble remembering who was who. Also for a love story, that part felt secondary to the wedding. That may have been the point but I wanted more from the two leads. I didn't feel their supposed great love for each other. The characters were likable enough, however, and I did feel a goo [...]
