There are several periods in history that I am especially fond of and the Golden Age of Hollywood is one of them. While this novella catches just the beginning of that time, I still found myself immersed in a tale with enough history to give depth and flesh both to the characters and plot. I enjoyed this quick trip to another place and time!As with any thing “golden,” there was a darker side, too, and this story’s main plotline involves blackmail. Clara is innocently caught up in the schem [...]

Route 66 is a famous route that used to cross our country and given many, many people happy memories before the days of the interstate highways. The author has beautifully given good memories to a young woman named Clara and her brother, Henry. It is a at once a fun, suspenseful, novella that is a perfect length to read in an evening. Debra Marvin has shown that it is possible to present a novella with well-defined characters that invite the reader’s empathy and a complete, compelling plot tha [...]

Clara's innocence casts purity into a dark situation. Set-up, she and Julian Dyson joined together to discover the mystery.Flagstaff Arizona made for a perfect setting. A place I've visited and enjoyed.Clara is in theater, an actress on stage. This made it an interesting read. I was drawn in from the first scene, stranded along side the road. There were twists I didn't see coming. And the ending I loved it.

I enjoyed this story, the intrigue, romance and the setting of Flagstaff. This made me homesick for the many years I spent in Arizona and New Mexico working with the Navajo.I am blessed to count many of that tribe and other tribes as friends. Thanks again for a trip down memory lane.

Are you after a quick read that’s engaging without taking itself too seriously? Light, without being frivolous or silly? If you are, then I recommend you pick up this novella. It was just the change of pace I needed after the last few novels I’ve read. There’s no complicated back story or plot developments to try and get your head around; just two people who chance to meet along Route 66, get caught up in a bit of intrigue, and discover that maybe they’ve found something they didn’t kn [...]

“Starlight Serenade” is a delightfully involving historical romance with elements of mystery and suspense. Author Debra E. Marvin sets the story in Arizona of the 1930’s, and she wonderfully captures the atmosphere and energy of the time and place. After the death of her mother, Clara Longworth heads for Hollywood and hopes for stardom and a successful life for herself and her younger brother, Henry. Their journey takes a detour, however, when their bus breaks down outside Flagstaff, Arizo [...]

This was my first story set in the roaring 20’s and 30’s, a vastly different time period where things were shaking and moving…at least for women anyway! They were expressing more freedom in speech, rights, clothing and hairstyle (thus the short bob). A time when jazz was hot and dance halls were where the cool cats prowled! This was also a sweet love story were misconceptions and first impressions were wrong and there was more under the surface of a person than first meets the eye! Two peo [...]

This is the first book I've read by Debra E. Marvin and I loved her writing. I discovered that I own another book she's written, so it is getting bumped up the To Be Read pile! Julian and Clara were realistic and developed. I enjoyed reading about Henry, also. Clara has a nice little spiritual journey story arc. Besides the romance aspect of the story, there is also the mystery and suspense of who is doing the blackmailing. It was fun to not have figured it out before it was revealed in the book [...]

This was a quick, sweet glimpse into the past. I admit that I was unfamiliar with Arizona's history, so I enjoyed the lesson on Prohibition-era Flagstaff. While I enjoyed the quick dive into the action in the story, I struggled to keep track of all of the male characters at first. They were all introduced quickly, and the story is told from more than one viewpoint. This initially added to my confusion. By the time I was keeping all of them straight, the novella was almost done. That could just be [...]

Starlight Serenade is a unique and light-hearted romance! I enjoyed Clara and Julian’s journey and delighted in the celestial headings that begin each chapter and the historical tidbits that were included throughout the narrative. Debra E. Marvin has shared a nostalgic trip to the past in Starlight Serenade. I received a complimentary copy of this novella in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.
