Note : I read the German translation (Fischer Buecherei, 1958).Obviously has to be seen as excerpts from the much larger of body of work "A study of history".I especially enjoyed the chapters on Sparta, and Assyria. And the very detailed analysis how militarism has over and over brought a decline in culture for the "infected / affected" societies.

A great treatise on how the root of conflicts lie in the nature of man and how civilizations are put together - not by class, economics, etc. Also - this is great on the dangers of militarism in general.
