A classic food text that not only tells us about Madelaine's early experiences in the Savoie (Savoy) region of the Alps, but also describes in folkloric details the recipes and rites of this ancient region. I travelled to the Annecy area to research the Mount Cenis pass in the 18th century for Appetite For Violets but this book is where I found a full understanding of mountain food and its heritage.

The southwest mountains of France are areas of poverty. The traditional recipes are suitable for those who farm and ranch the marginally fertile slopes of the Alps. Many interesting recipes.However, the first half of the book contains geological and geographical lessons. Rather unusual.
