Ampleforth, Balliol; then Yorkshire Post, Times, and finally Guardian. What more could you wish. Easily sliding in to political journalism and no surprise that the first interview was with Douglas Hurd. In addition a conscientious mind and powerful memory, which enabled him to avoid taking notes, which were recalled as soon as he got back into the office.
